Why do we like Warrior Princesses? Survey!
Hello, everyone! I'm conducting some research for my term paper-- please help me? It shouldn't take too long, and you needn't reply to every question.
The text boxes are where you supply other answers (if one of the selections doesn't fit), BTW. Sometimes the formatting gets screwed up...
Please answer every question that applies to you?
It shouldn't take more than 5 minutes...probably less, if you read quickly. ^^
Mass-posted, because as you know, surveys are only useful if it's taken by many, many people. X-posted to multi-fandoms. Click here to follow the survey.
So. Why do we like Warrior Princesses? Discuss here! :)

The community has been alive for less than 24 hours, and already we've got a request to change the focus of the community to simply "warrior women." Which is something I will resist To The Death! (Okay, maybe not that much resistance, but I'll resist it.) And the reason for my resistance is tied up with the definition of a warrior princess, and the ways that it differs from simply women who kick butt. So, I thought I should post about my thoughts on the differences, and what I wanted this community to be about.
Warrior women are women who have chosen to be warriors, which has traditionally been a male profession or calling. So, warrior women are women who have chosen to compete on a basis that is primarily male by asociation. Now, this has several unspoken implications, which I disagree with: First off, it implies that women of note have to get ahead only on male terms, and that the only way to get anything done is on male terms; And secondly, the fact that women who fill male roles (i.e., the warrior) are newsworthy and good role models, combined with the fact that you never hear about men who choose to compete on traditionally feminine terms (except in terms of humor and slight derision) sets up a two-tier hierarchy, where the Male-associated stuff is more important and note-worthy than the female-associated stuff. (All that being said, I still think butt-kicking girls are hot. :-)
But the warrior princess carries a different set of implications. By the virtue of her status as princess, she's already on top of the female world, but by the virtue as the status as a warrior, she's got high standing in the male world. The warrior princess has, basically, the best of both worlds, because she's succeeded in both the male and female roles. For me, the warrior princess really represents a positive female character and a good role model, because she hasn't simply chosen to occupy either traditional female roles or
traditional male roles, she's chosen to succeed (and has succeeded) in both
. The warrior princess transcends the whole gender role system, which I think is the most important difference between the warrior princess and the warrior woman. Warrior women seem to embody the concept of "to get ahead, you have to out-macho the men," while the warrior princess embodies teh concept of "screw this either/or choice, I can do both
Anyway, I may have gotten a bit too metaphysical here (and I'm sure you'll tell me if you think I have), but that's the fundamental difference between the warrior woman and the warrior princess as I see them. And I think that the concept of the warrior princess, the woman that has succeeded on both female and male terms, is a concept and a character archetype that is emerging in our modern society, and one that is definitely worth looking at and thinking about. (Hence, this community!) Current Mood: contemplative

So, welcome to the community that's all about the Warrior Princesses! First off, we should make a list of warrior princesses.
So, the beginning of the list is as follows:
